home.

We made it. We had a delightful mini-vacation and despite the short time we spent in San Diego, it was certainly worth the drive. And if nothing else, it was worth it to catch a load of this:

Whaaa?! We never would've seen this stuff in Phoenix, so it was kind of cool to have a little snow time (even if my footwear was anything but appropriate). We played a little on our way back, but couldn't wait to see our Shibey baby!!! She had so much fun with Kelsi and Collin and said she'd have them doggy sit her anytime. :)
We have a super busy week coming up. Hoping to make some changes and get quite a bit of things done. If only I could get going for the day.....

Monday morning love.

SAAAAN DIAAAHHHGOOO.

Despite the crazy California weather (high of 52, 80% chance of rain?!), we had a great day at Sea World (as we always do). I feel like I learn something new every time I go there. This time, it was sting ray knowledge. We talked to the exhibit lady for sooo long and I learned so much about rays. For example, did you know that the part of the sting ray that stings is a small barb that sits at the base of the tail? The tail itself is harmless and delivers no sting. See?! You learn something new every day.

We're here with my family and a few other families whose sons played football with Josh. Also despite the weather, the boys rode this all day (repeatedly):

Pure insanity (IT WAS SO COLD). Wet + cold = no good in my book. But we all had a great time. Tomorrow we'll enjoy San Diego some more for a few hours before heading back to Phoenix to my nice clean house and my FAVORITE PUPPY EVER. The Barbs let me know they took her running and she loved it!!! I'm so glad she's getting over some fear issues with being walked in the city (around buses/motorcycles/loud things). Also glad the Barbs are spoiling her with attention while we're gone. :)

We are thankful for mini-breaks and being able to spend some time together.
Hope you all enjoyed your Saturday.

Miss V and the doggysitters.

Happy Friday, everyone! In a few hours, we'll be off!

Source

We are taking a well-deserved little break this weekend and meeting my family in San Diego for a few days. We'll do Sea World and, most importantly, CHILL. The only slight damper on this awesome mini-vacation: we have to leave our little Viesserton behind. :( I don't know if she'd get along with Shamu, so we're playing it safe and leaving her with a doggysitter. Or 'sitters' should I say. The Barbs (hubby + wife team Collin and Kelsi) are going to stay with Viesa this weekend. Collin is a classmate of Christian's and Viesa loves the Barbs! She's super lucky to get to hang out with such awesome doggysitters for the weekend and knowing that is helping to ease the doggy separation anxiety.

Yes...we are THOSE people.

Viesa and her other dad (she can't wait to see him)!
We also got some great news today! We've had Viesa for almost two whole months now and she feels like she's always been a part of our family. But before Viesa was a part of our family, she was a very loved part of another family, Tom and Gina's family. Tom and Gina (Gina is our fave-guy-Kyle's big sister) have been doing the Air Force tango and moving all over the place, their most recent home being in Georgia. They found out today that when Tom is finished with his current deployment, they will be moving back to ... TUCSON! Viesa is so excited to be able to see her other set of parents all the time now that they will be so close!

Now I really should be finishing packing, but I have a sweet doggy in my lap and I hate to get up. Snuggling > laundry.

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

LOVE. Ash + V

smunday.

So, apparently I can't figure out what day of the week it is. I've been struggling with it all day! Maybe it has something to do with the fact that we went to Tucson on Friday night so I could go to my dear friend/faithful bridesmaid's baby shower on Saturday, but had to be back in Phoenix for work bright and early on Sunday morning! We are so used to leaving Sunday nights so we can be back before Chris has school on Monday so I spent all day struggling to remember that it's Sunday.

We did a few things key things this [really busy] weekend. 1) Did a bunch of computer homework for new grad academy (BOOO), 2) showered baby Emily with love and lots of presents, 3) helped see Chris' family off on their week-long vacation to Hawaii to celebrate... 4) LITTLE REESE'S BIRTHDAY! We may have celebrated from afar with a little party in our hearts but alas, the boy is one whole year old AND GETS TO CELEBRATE IN PARADISE with...6) TAYLOR! Who also had a birthday! Happy 18th! (that's how adults are wished a happy birthday) 5) Took care of tedious business (we're working on getting one of our many extra cars up here so Chris isn't stuck at home during my 12 hour shifts).

Needless to say...busy busy busy. As usual. Chris has an exam this week, so he's in CPR/cardiovascular overdrive. Which strangely enough also touches on some key things my patients are going through, so we're helping each other. The new job is going well! My preceptor is still fantastic (whew). I feel like I'm starting to get into a little groove so hopefully this is forward progression. There is just so much to take in and if you mess up, someone winds up hurt/dead/maimed/messed-up-in-some-way. Um...feel the pressure. Still having thoughts about grad school and pondering the question: when are you in so much debt that adding more on top of it just doesn't even matter anymore? Hopefully, I'll come to that conclusion soon.

So, Happy Smunday to you all. Whichever day it felt like to you. Viesa is happy to be home after a fun weekend (she's a homebody).  Off to snuggle till we fall asleep. Either Viesa or Christian, not sure which. :)

LOVE and more love.

PS: SARAH GRACE...I had a dream last night that you and I were hiking though the jungle and you took me ocean kayaking in Hawaii. Just sayin'.... <3

what kind of crazy person wants to go back to school already?

This crazy person does.
Big question: to graduate school now or not to graduate school now?

And if the answer is yes (which I think it is...):

Grad school here? ..........
Correspondence program.

.......... or grad school here?
By correspondence also... no worries, not moving to DC...

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. School is expensive but starting (and subsequently finishing again) sounds really awesome/fun/exciting/challenging.

Stay tuned...

whew.

And so ends four 12's and an 8 in 6 days. You do the math. I'm beyond tired and because I haven't been able to find my Camelback OR my Urban Assault water bottle, I haven't been keeping a bottle on me. This means I'm dry as all heck and I've been nursing a massive headache for two days. Silly nurses, always forgetting to take care of themselves. I need to find that dang bottle. If it's on me, I'll drink! If not...I have soda at lunch (BAD) and that's it. :/

On Sunday night we had some friends from medical school over to hang out. We also had a med school applicant staying with us. We signed ourselves up as a home for applicants coming from out of the area for their interviews. Instead of staying at a stinky old hotel, they can stay at our house! This was our first experience having a student and it was cool! We did our best to convince him that Phoenix was the best place to go (I hope our little party didn't scare him off) and I think he was buying it. He hit the hay early to be rested for his big interview, while we played a board game so kindly given to us as a wedding present from one of Chris' fellow students and her husband. Last Night On Earth pits zombies against survivors to see who will come out on top during the ..... LAST NIGHT ON EARTH! :D Beer + Pizza + Dr. Pepper (for moi) + zombie board game = a fantastic Sunday night. I unfortunately crashed early (36 hours in three days).

Survivors won, btw.

Our Valentine's evening was simple and fun. We picked up our fave Mexican place around these parts, America's Taco Shop, for America's Favorite for 2 (2 carne asada burritos, 2 carne asada tacos, chips & salsa, and 2 Mexican cokes) and Easy A at the Redbox. Ahhhhhhh. My idea of a great night.

Yesterday, Chris drove me to work and picked me up so he could have the car. He picked me up after a long and tiring day on the unit and I was hungry. Me: "Let's get something on the way home!" Chris: "But I need to go home and change first." Me [starving tired monster]: "Why? We'll hit a drive through!" Chris: "BABE. PLEASE let me go home and change!" Me: [grumpy face]. We walk through the door and this:

Say it with me...."AWWWWWWWW!"

I mean....where does he come off being sweet on a day that is not my birthday, our anniversary (dating OR wedding), or Valentine's Day? He cooked me a delicious dinner and ... Netflix 1999 SNL. :) Another great night. So stoked for 2 great nights in one week!

Today: Me and Viesa went for a walk and she saw a cat and did NOT go nuts. Yay Viesa! Such a good girl. Now I'm trying to stifle the headache and hit the hay. But I'm off until Sunday!!!! HECKYES. Sweet relief.

Goodnight internet people. We're out.

Love,

Hoy es Lunes.

Monday! This is my first day off following three 12-hour shifts and it feels goood to sit on the couch. This also happens to be my first Valentine's Day as a married lady. We've never really been Valentine's Day crazy, usually just exchanging gifts (who doesn't like an excuse to give someone a present!) and some combination of eating/movie watching in some capacity. This year will most likely be no different as I have to work tomorrow so we can't really stay up late or do anything crazy. However, we did gift giving last night.

My Schwinn at the Dash (before it died).
Some of you may remember the Diamond Dash of 2010 where Chris and I raced around Tucson to find a $10,000 diamond ring. Well...despite having a really good time, we did not win the diamond AND my bike took a dive in the first fifteen minutes of the race (we had to bring in my sister's bike for back up). It's been sitting in the yard since that day, waiting to be fixed.

Well wouldn't you know it, my dear husband snatched up my bike and with the help of bike-savvy and super nice neighboor, Ethan, my bike has a new lease on life.

My bike is now beautiful and orange and I can't wait to ride it around. Christian's treat was an Apple TV, which will apparently connect us to the TV and our computers and the music and the movies and all of that stuff. I'd love to say I knew exactly what I was buying when I bought it, but all I know is that he's been talking about getting one for almost a year. He's really excited and I'm excited for him to show me what it does. :) Even my mom sent us a Valentine's Day card with a Subway gift card in it. Now we're having a Valentine's Day lunch (thanks, Mom).

My bike!
Apple TV!

I can say that Miss Viesa is pretty unenthused about Valentine's Day. Either that or she's recovering from a late night of hanging out with the med school kids. Girlfriend is a party animal. I'm sure when we go for a bike ride later, she'll be more into it.

So, Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. And Happy 99th Birthday to Arizona, my home. And Happy Monday. I hope everyone enjoys the day. We know we sure will. :)

Love love love.

not too shabby...

Feeling surprisingly upbeat for working 26 hours in two days. I love coming home to miss thang. And my bed.

cheers to a successful first day....

Holy cow, I survived. My first day on the unit was a great one. I didn't get a full ICU experience on day one because of overflow from the med/surg and telemetry (cardiac) unit (we had those less-sick guys today), but I got to get used to the unit and my preceptor! SHE'S AWESOME! Her name is Courtney and she's super cool and nice and funny and smart. Just the kind of nurse I want to be. :D

It felt really nice to get paid big girl bucks for working hard all day and I can't wait for my first big girl paycheck. I might just die.

12 hours was way long (I haven't working a 12 since April of last year!) but I came home to my family and it was the BEST.

Look what I came home to today!!!!
THANK YOU for all of your support and kind words that kept me from playing in traffic on I10 during my job search. I can't believe I've moved past all of that and it feels amazing.

LOVE YOU.

crazy past few weeks.

I hope my day first day is like this...
My first week of orientation or so is over and I'm on my regular
schedule now, which consists of one eight hour class a week (Wednesdays), four hours of computer work, and two twelve hour shifts a week with a preceptor. My first three shifts are all in a row (gulp), even though I haven't done a 12 hour shift since May. I cannot tell a lie, I'm freaked out.

I'm in the workforce (FINALLY) and it's weird. Especially since I'm an ICU nurse and I went through my ICU rotation at school thoroughly enjoying myself however not necessarily paying close attention because "I never plan on working ICU." Bite your tongue, dummy. Here I am. Luckily, studying is something I am familiar with and I'm ready to re-learn everything. I just hope my preceptor doesn't think I'm an idiot. Oh...and I hope I don't hurt anyone. That too.

For tonight, we're relaxing and enjoying a little family couch time (on our little tiny couch). We just watched the Coyotes beat the Dallas Stars in overtime (go Phoenix!) and inhaled some Pei Wei. I wish we could chillax together like this every night.

I Love my roomies.
And all of you in internet land.

xo,
Ash (shhh...Vies is snoozin')

wag n' wash!

So, we're getting ready to take a family trip down to Tucson and Miss V is excited to see Gina and all her family back in Tucson. She decided she needed to look her very very best, so she asked her mom and dad to get her all schnazzed up and we were happy to oblige. :)

Wag n' Wash!
There is a fantastic shopping district only a few minutes from our house called The Melrose District. Nestled among the adorable antique and vintage shops and boutiques is this fantastic place! Wag n' Wash Healthy Pet Center sells tons of pet treats including organic and natural dog foods, organic dog/cat treats, home baked organic dog biscuits, and other pet supplies. But that's not even the best part. Wag n' Wash is also a self-service dog washing facility with all the equipment and space needed to give your dog a fantastic bath without the mess and hassel of fighting your dog in your own bathtub. Let me tell you: worth the money!!! Washes are VERY reasonably priced and our pretty pupper got the full spa treatment, including natural oatmeal shampoo, a hot aloe conditioner for dogs with ::ahem:: shedding issues, and a shiny coat leave-in conditioner. They have awesome steel basin tubs, temperature controlled sprayers, and all the brushes/scrubbers/towels needed. They even have a commercial groomer-style blow dryer (which she did NOT like, but was also worth it in the end).

BEFORE
For those of you who don't personally know Viesey, she's kind of a scared-y cat about new/loud/weird things and we expected this to be no different. Here she is looking kind of pissed at us for whatever we're about to do to her. She was slightly skittish but she got the hang of it eventually. She looked like a sad, wet coyote once we got going.

poor baby.

Then, OMG!!! What a surprise, but not only moments after she debuted her fresh new look did we run into another Shiba!!! This handsom Shiba boy was black and soft and wonderful and she did pretty well with him! His mom and me/Chris sat in the corner and traded Shiba stories for almost 30 minutes. She couldn't stop exclaiming how beautiful Vies was (we know) and how sweet and love-y she was (yes!) as she rolled on her back in my lap for a scratch. We loved hearing other crazy Shib-ey stories (because they are quite quirky/peculiar dogs) and Viesa made a new friend (Buko).

A few home-baked organic peanut butter treats later and we were off. Bottom line: Phoenicians (I know none of you are, but oh well)! Wash your dog here! It's easy and awesome and a great place to meet pet friends.

Love,
Ash + Chris + the fluffy/yummy-smelling pup

Bummin'.

It's collldddddd and we miss our doctor. :( Vies looks a little less concerned than me, but trust me...she's bummed. Exam week in the house. :/

Brrrrr. We love you, Christian and we're feeling selfish. We support your studying! Good job!!

Nighty night.
Ash + Sleeping Viesa

another day off....another day COLD.

Although I have to be honest....it is kind of no where NEAR as cold up here as it is in Tucson. :D Right now on weather.com, Tucson says 22 degrees, feels like 9. Gulp. Phoenix = 37 degrees, feels like 31. Still frigid, but not arctic like Tucson. Good luck with that, peeps.

I did remember to cover our little vine on the porch! It survived the night, as did our neighborhood cats.

I think we might stay in bed a bit today as well. We have some errands to run but Chris has school and is studying all day for a Friday exam so it'll be just us girlies today.

Ahhhhh....bed. We love bed.
So happy Thursday, friends. We'll probably post again later...since we have the day off and, well, we can. :)

Be warm.

i have a voice!

Yesterday, I remembered a random acronym from day one of orientation and was for some reason awarded two Harkin movie passes! Score! We've been hankering to see The King's Speech, especially since we watched the Oscar hullabaloo (12 nominations!) and the SAG Awards where it won for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and Collin Firth won for Best Actor.

Bottom line: We loved it. Really well done. Besides the fantastic Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush, the movie also had Albus Dumbledore and Peter Pettigrew (I mean Michael Gambon and Timothy Spall). I love true stories. Especially ones of overcoming the odds.

So go see it! Go! So when it wins a bunch of Oscars you can say, 'Those were so well deserved.'

Oh, and we are still snuggling on the couch. It's SO COLD.

Luuuuv,
Ash + Vies

OH YEAH....I forgot....

RN BSN SUCKAS!

oh. em. gee.

Holy Guacamole. I would just like to take a moment to tell everyone in the world that my little city is confused. Average high for Phoenix, AZ on February 2nd = 70 degrees. Temperature right now is 34 degrees (according to weather.com, feels like 21). Yes. 21 degrees. I'm not quite sure what to do. Viesa is in a super weird mood and I blame the weather. I had to stop her this morning from roughhouse-ing with the neighbor's 90-year-old yellow lab that shares our yard. Poor thing can't see or hear and was kind of early-morning-assaulted by my hyper Shiba.

Bottom line: I'm off today so I don't think we'll be moving from these spots.

Shnuggles.

Blessings.

I was thinking of blogging a bunch about day two of orientation (which was pretty average). In fact, I'll go ahead and say that I learned a lot about Maryvale, did some nurse-y stuff (cool!), and got an official badge (that says RN AND BSN on it....because I busted my butt for that second part!). I'll post photos and more later. But for now I have to share a story that I have been keeping up with for a bit now. As a nurse and now a wife (and a someday mother), I feel so engrossed in her experience.

First you should know: I have a slightly unhealthy obsession with Mormon housewife blogs. One could argue many reasons, like this self proclaimed 'feminist obsessed with reading mormon housewife blogs'. Maybe we enjoy a break from our lives by watching amazingly sweet photos of joyful motherhood in an Anthropologie catalog unfold before our eyes. Maybe we enjoy seeing people have so much fun being married, since (and as a newlywed, I think I have the authority to say this) people have nothing but NOT nice things to say about being married these days. Maybe I like trolling for new styles and outfit ideas ('cause these ladies are CUTE). For whatever the reason, I follow a few (including that of our AMAZING wedding photographers, the Langs) and really enjoy reading them.

The Nielson Family 2008, Blue Lily Photography
One day, while enjoying this new hobby of mine, I came across the blog of Stephanie Nielson or 'Nie Nie' as she affectionately refers to herself in the blogisphere. A Utah/Arizona (Mesa) resident, her blog, The Nie Nie Dialogues, was started in 2004 as a cutesy mommy blog and chronicled her life as a young (first one at 20, four by 23, mormonnormal) mommy and wife. I read through the old stuff first and read posts about her life with beautiful pictures of her and her family. In August 2008, she and her husband were flying in a small private plane in Arizona with a friend from church piloting when the plane crashed. Their friend and pilot died. Her husband, Christian, suffered burns on his face and neck, while Stephanie was severely burned over 80% of her body. They were both treated for months at Maricopa Medical Center, right down the street from my house. It houses the only burn center in Arizona and acts as a regional burn center for severe cases from Utah and New Mexico. They were treated there until they could return to their home in Provo, Utah and to their four lovely children.

It has been about two and a half years since their accident and Nei Nei still blogs faithfully about her life, her adorable/hysterical kids, her wonderful husband, her treatments, her pain, her joy, her faith, and what a blessing it is to be able to wake up each morning next to the people who mean the most to you. I feel like I went through a definite period of self-loathing during my 8 month job hunt and found it far too easy to forget about the miracles that were staring me in the face every day: getting to marry my everything, having found a beautiful and affordable home to live in, my soon-to-be-husband having the opportunity to fulfill his dream of serving others through medicine. I watch her story and read her blog and as a nurse I can truly appreciate the ongoing process that is both physical and emotional healing. Stephanie will have surgeries for years and years to come and will deal with pain every day. However, watching her enjoy decorating her house with her kids for Valentine's Day and taking snuggle naps with her husband gives me so much pride in what I have chosen to do with my life. Patients go home and enjoy life and it's the BEST! I also feel so much humility as I have no grounds to declare my life a struggle. Even if it feels that way sometimes.

Nielson Family 2010, Blue Lily Photography
Reading Stephanie's words is like taking a look through a new pair of glasses. When I read her words I see a moment in life that was nearly missed and is thus savored all the more completely. I feel so grateful to have a chance to experience life. I feel honored at the thought of being someone's mother someday, to have the privilege of enjoying my children and watching them grow (which is what motherhood truly is to her). I hug my husband every day and kiss him square on the mouth. Every day. And tell him I'm in love with him. Every day. I feel like I savor moments on the couch with the dog now like I might savor a day in Disneyland before, because it is a chance to be and feel and love that I have! What a gift! A chance that was almost taken away from Stephanie and that she savors every day, on the good days and the bad.

You can read (and fall in love with...I DARE you not to) Stephanie's blog here. I hope that no matter what your religious beliefs are, you can appreciate a story about love and strength and miracles and hope and a different outlook on life. I know her blog found me right around the time that my attitude needed a swift kick in the pants. I hope maybe she can kick you in the pants too.

And please remember (and never forget)...
That I love you. And Christian loves you. Very much. Thanks for being the people we love and loving us back. We are thankful.

XO,
Ash

Watch Stephanie's story below. Despite its intention as a mormon message, it comes across to me as a faith message. And a people message. And a love message.

P.S. The part that makes my nurse heart shiver every time I hear it is near the beginning of the video. "I am Stephanie Nielson, and I am not my body." We all are so much more than that and as healthcare workers patients should always be treated accordingly. Thanks for the reminder, Nie Nie.
